Registered Childcare: Accidents & Emergencies Policy
ACCIDENTS & EMERGENCIES October 2011
We endeavour to keep children safe when they are in our care.
Our premises have been checked by Ofsted and they meet the requirements of the EYFS.
We regularly review, update and practise fire evacuation procedures and record dates and times of fire drills. We regularly review and update if required our Risk Assessments.
As Registered Childminders, we are legally required to have a valid first-aid certificate and we undertake further training every three years. We can administer basic first-aid treatment and our first-aid box is clearly labelled and easily accessible to us.
We hold written permission from parents in the Contracts to seek emergency treatment for their children if it is needed.
We provide emergency back-up cover when necessary to each other.
We keep a printed emergency contact list for all minded children in a specific and readily available place in addition to information accessible by us on our computer containing the following:-
Children’s Names, Children’s Dates of birth, Days each child is normally with us
Children’s/Parents’ home Addresses and home/work/mobile Contact numbers
Children’s GP's name and telephone number
Additional named contact and telephone number for each child (if there is one)
Any special conditions/allergies for each child
Emergency contact details for each child, (kept on a mobile phone), are carried with us when we leave the premises with the children. The ratio of adults to children on any outing, (except in an emergency), is 1: 3. We have written consent from parents in our Contracts for taking the children out. It is unlikely, except in an emergency situation, that the children would be transported in vehicles other than our own or by anyone other than us.
Our emergency mobile numbers are: 07703 682488 / 07941 947485.
There is a first aid kit in the car. Should we leave the premises and the car for any extended length of time, (for an outing as opposed to Nursery collection or short walk), unless in an emergency situation, we would carry a first aid kit.
Should a child have an accident and receive a minor injury whilst in our care, we would administer first aid, take the child to hospital if necessary and attempt to make contact with the child’s parent or other named contact if the child required hospital treatment.
In an emergency, e.g. sudden severe illness or injury to one of the children,
our procedure is that one of us focuses on the casualty and the other takes responsibility for the other children and making the necessary telephone calls, i.e. emergency services, casualty's parents and parents of all other children.
If necessary and possible, we would enlist the help of a close friend, neighbour or relative.
A record of accidents and first aid treatment given are entered in our Accident Book and made available for parents to sign and provide a copy if required. Parents are informed of any accidents sustained and treatment administered whilst the child is in our care.
Should the incident be significant, we will notify Ofsted, the local child protection agency, the Health & Safety Executive (if relevant) and our NCMA Insurance company as soon as possible.
Should any other emergency occur, we will contact parents as soon as possible.
We expect parents to contact us in the event of any accident or emergency which may
befall them.
