ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINES October 2011
WE ARE ONLY PERMITTED TO ADMINISTER MEDICATION
WITH PRIOR WRITTEN CONSENT
We will only administer non-prescription medication such as pain/fever relief to any child under any circumstances if we have received prior written consent and only if there is a health reason to do so. No medication containing Aspirin will be administered to any child unless it has been prescribed by a doctor.
You have given prior consent for us to administer prescribed and non-prescribed medicine in the Contract before the placement commenced, to cover, in advance, any medicines given by us to your child. However:-
Should your child require medication, please bring the medicine in a properly labelled container and complete and sign a medicine consent form giving written information detailing times and dosage of any medication administered within the previous eight hours and details including times and dosage of any medication you require us to administer.
We will only administer prescription medication to the child it is prescribed for by a doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist.
We will keep written records of all medicines administered to children in our care.
We will inform parents when a medicine has been administered including the time and dosage. Medicines will be stored safely, in a refrigerator if required, in the original containers.
Should your child suffer from Asthma or severe Allergy and require an Inhaler or an Epi-pen, parents are required to obtain for us a Health Care Plan written by a health professional and signed by them and the parents, and to arrange for us to be trained by a health professional to administer this medication to their child. We will then require a signature from the health professional stating that we have received training.
We have experience in the administration of Inhalers and have been trained in the administration of Epi-pens, however we have been advised by NCMA that our insurance will be invalid unless we adhere to the above conditions and that we should not allow any child to enter our
setting prior to those conditions being met.
Should your child require administration of any other medication that requires technical/medical knowledge, parents will need to arrange relevant training for us to attend with a qualified health professional before we may care for the child.
If your child is infectious, please consult a health professional and check our Sickness & Infectious Diseases Policy before bringing the child to us.
If children are unwell, we are legally required to take necessary steps to prevent the spread of infection, and take appropriate action when they are ill, which at times may mean exclusion. Should your child become unwell whilst in our care, we may contact you to request that you collect the child as soon as possible.
